Review of the product
This Professional Dental Guard from Dental Duty comes with 4 guards, directions, and guard case inside of a box. The guards are BPA Free. They can be used to help protect teeth from grinding or clenching, as athletic mouth guards, or as teeth whitening trays. The Amazon product picture of the mouth guards make them appear to be a light blue color but mine are clear. Watch the video to see instructions and a demo of molding the guard to the teeth.
Experience using the product
I clench my jaws and possibly grind when I sleep. After chipping one of my teeth, my dentist suggested using a mouth guard at night. I was afraid the guard would mess up my teeth, so I didn’t try one. Then I chipped another tooth and the dentist told me again to use a night time mouth guard. This time I listened. I have used many different brands, made of varying textures. I even tried the kind that molds to your top AND bottom teeth on the double-sided guard….felt like I couldn’t get enough air with that one since I am also a mouth breather.
By now I have been sleeping with mouth guards for several years. I always dread when it is time to make a new mold. But this set with their directions being surprisingly easy to follow makes it simple. The guards also feel more pliable and soft to my mouth and gums, which I really appreciate.
Here is a tip I have learned over the years of molding guards to my teeth. There is a slight v in the front top of this mouth guard. Have a mirror near you to use when you place the guard in your mouth and before you do any fitting, line that v mark on the mouth guard to the center of your 2 front teeth.
It depends on how severe you grind or bite on the guards when you wear them, as to how soon you have to replace. I can wear mine between 4-6 months before replacing.
I always rinse my mouth guard before putting in my mouth for a better and cleaner feeling at night.
In the morning you can brush your mouth guard after brushing your teeth. Rinse well and allow the mouth guard to dry completely before storing in its storage case. I have seen were someone said they boiled their mouth guard to clean it, but beware of possibly melting your mouth guard if you boil it. The directions give clear instructions not to use water above 176F and no longer than 15 seconds in the water. (Every brand I have ever used says to remove the cup or bowl from microwave, or pan from stove top before putting the mouth guard in the water.)
Why the rating?
I give these mouth guards 5 stars for ease of molding, soft smooth texture against my teeth, gums, and tongue, easy directions for molding, and a storage case.
Bottom Line
After all these years of using different kinds and brands of mouth guards, this is my favorite one!
I won’t dread molding another one from this set when this one is ready to toss in the trash….around 6 months. This product was received, and tested during a promotional period at a discount. I have attempted to give a thorough, comprehensive and honest review. I actually sleep better with my mouth guard protecting my teeth and jaw. I didn’t expect that when I was told to wear one. No more chipped teeth or aching jaw in the morning. I hope this review has helped you.
UPDATE OCTOBER 2016: My stud is still using these—he has gone through 1 of them only because it had a little hole where his molars grind, but he has seen a world of difference!
I purchased the Dental Duty Professional Dental Guard at no cost. Great item for TMJ sufferers and I wanted to share our personal experience, with this item. However, should this product fail or its usability or quality diminish from typical usage I do reserve the right to edit and update this review and its 5 star rating.
Works well. Better than spending the $100 that my dentist said he could do it for.
I have a $500 bite guard from my dentist and it pales in comparison to these. I've only gone through 3 of the 4 in the past few months. The first two were because I was learning how to cut them down to fit my mouth comfortably. These are really easy to use and you can easily cut them down as much as you like. I trimmed mine down so that they are only right between my teeth and they fit great. I've been wearing the last one for weeks now. I just keep it clean by using my toothbrush on it periodically. My jaw feels fine when I wake up and these don't keep me awake. I highly recommend them. My girlfriend also uses them, but she doesn't even trim them down after they are fitted. She says they are still comfortable for her. If you're reading this review, just buy a box and give them a shot (even if they do have an annoyingly long product name).
I grind my teeth at night and so my dentist recommended a night guard. He was going to charge me $600 for a custom one. I heard about these and figured it would be worth a try if it could save me a lot of money. I followed the directions exactly to make a custom mold for my mouth. I only needed a top guard and this set comes with 4 moldable pieces. My mouth is a little shallower and so I just cut part of the ends off with regular scissors. So glad I saved so much money by trying these. And if one wears out or I lose it... no big deal! I have 3 more!

Very comfortable and easy to use as long as you follow the directions, with some exceptions. Heat a cup of water to 158-170 and pour the water over the guard in a small container. It's very important to use a thermometer to measure the temp! Anything over 178 and it will completely lose its shape! After 10-15 seconds, remove the guard with the thermometer probe and place it into your upper teeth and suck all the water and air out of your mouth and very gently bite down taking care not to pierce the plastic and leave for 10-15 seconds. I followed the directions and dropped it into cold water after this and found that the shape deformed slightly and caused some tightness and discomfort when in use so I warmed it again and left it in my mouth for 5 minutes to let it set them dropped it into a bowl of cold water. This resulted in a perfectly formed dental guard.
Like many others, I was told by my dentist that my teeth have visible marks from grinding my teeth at night and she tried selling me a custom guard for over $800. I told myself I would give a few of the other cheaper options available on amazon a try before I gave in to paying my dentist such an absurd amount of money. I have spent at least $75 on other dental guards prior to purchasing this product and this has been the only one that has worked for me. The others I have tried are either too big, uncomfortable, or just fall out of my mouth at night. This mouth guard fits comfortable in my mouth and stays in for the entire night. I like the option of being able to mold the guard to my lower teeth as it stays in place much better than with the upper teeth.
Tip: The instructions say to avoid placing the guard in boiling water as it may melt; however, I found that the best way to fully shape this guard to my mouth was to place it in boiling water. The mouth guard doesn't fully mold to your mouth when placed in water that is only the recommended 158-176 degrees. Also, this seems to work much better when you mold this guard for your lower teeth as it prevents it from falling out of place at night.
I love dealing with a company that has great customer service and hopefully a good product. Both are the case with Do Great Things’ Professional Dental Guard -4(pack).
I ordered and received the Guard but put off fitting it because the instructions I had read made me a bit nervous about doing it right and/or burning my mouth. Two follow-up emails from the company asking me how things went prompted me to try fitting the Guard. Well, things didn’t go so well. I messed up the two large ones included in the order. Honestly, the included directions may not be the best. Read below for better fitting instructions.
Yet Jessica (the owner) pointed out in her email to me that her product was covered by a full, no questions asked 60 day guarantee. I replied to her indicating my fitting problems and sort of like magic, a new one was at my door in 2 days!!! I couldn’t believe it. She also emailed me her suggested fitting methodology which worked perfectly which I will share below. What a great company and product! I spent $14.95 for something that works great. My dentist recommended one that would have cost me $493, really. Go figure.
The challenge with fitting the guard is that boiling water is just too hot for the “plastic” and basically melts even if placed in the water for as short as 10 – 15 seconds. Jessica suggested “ When molding the guard do not heat the water to a boil, only warm the water so that the guard will soften and easily mold to your teeth also reduce the time you leave the guard into the water for. When molding the guard to your teeth press firmly against the guard using your fingers and this will give you better mold and secure fit.” Through trial and error I heated the water gradually until it reached just the right temperature so the guard was pliable but not melted and unusable. It worked perfectly and I have a great fit at a great price from a wonderfully fair and trustworthy company.
I highly recommend Do Great Things and their Professional Dental Guard -4(pack). I would confidently buy other things from this wonderful company. Thank you for your great customer support Jessica!
I had used the DenTek mouth guard product twice before this with pretty good success but the last one was falling apart and wasn't fitting very well (read slightly falling out during the night). The first thing I noticed about these is they are actually a larger size. My issue with the DenTek was it never quite got all the way back to my molars where as this one does. They also fit up higher towards the gum which in my opinion, is allowing for a tighter more secure fit. My first attempt at moulding them failed as I dropped them into boiling water, counted for 15 seconds and then tried to get it out. It was pretty much mushy mess and flopping around. I added some cool water to the boiling water and repeated and this time I had success. The water temperature they suggest you should really follow is all I'm saying. My first few nights with it in have been great. It feels nice and secure with lots of protection between the teeth.
- This is working out really well for me! It's quality material, and it does feel to me like professional-level material.
- The trick is to put it in and shape it while it's still pretty warm (but obviously not burning-hot! :p ), and especially, be sure your fingers are wet, or else they won't slide over the warm material. I re-warmed it and refined the shaping a few times, and did some trimming in between with clean kitchen scissors. I got it to where it's totally comfortable.
- I also did bite down *gently*, juuuuuust enough so that my bottom teeth are in their neutral position.
- So, yes, there is a bit of a technique to it. But seriously, if one can finger-paint, one ought to be able to shape this with a little bit of time and patience. If not, best go to the dentist and pay 10X to 15X more to pay them to do the shaping. For those willing to take a few minutes to shape it, it's super, *especially* for those of us who are on tight budgets.
- AND there are four, for just under $15!!!
