Tak: A Beautiful Game

Tak: A Beautiful Game

This was a gift for my daughter. It is enjoyable to play. Much more interesting and strategic than playing checkers, yet also without the complicated rules of chess. It is the perfect in between game.

Tak is a two-player abstract strategy game designed by James Ernest Good ideas and Patrick Rothfuss Very cool Writer and published by Cheapass Games in 2016. It was designed based on a description of a fictional game in Patrick Rothfuss' 2011 fantasy novel The Wise Man's Fear..

The point isn’t to win (or lose) Tak, Bredon tells Kvothe in Patrick Rothfuss’ The Wise Man’s Fear, but to play a beautiful game.

I was very reluctant to buy this game because I was worried that Patrick Rothfuss would procrastinate even one day longer and not write the third kingkiller book. After purchasing the game and learning that he had written a new book just about Tak I was not disappointed. All joking aside this game is very fun and very complicated. I sat down with my wife and some pals at my local tavern and over a few pints we learned how to play. Within a handful of 4x4 games we had moved up to 5x5 and played some great matches.

The quality is lovely, even the game box. I was extremely pleased with the board. The 'courtly' side is a little elaborate for my taste, but that's completely in keeping with the game's backstory. As for gameplay itself, we have really enjoyed it. It's fairlky easy to learn, quick to teach friends, and very entertaining even for spectators to watch and comment on each other's strategies. It's a huge hit at our home.

Awesome game. Seemed a bit complicated, but once you start to play it is simple yet challenging. I would like a "rustic" looking set as in some of the stock photos.

The goal is simple: make a road connecting two opposite sides of the board. On their turn, players may place a stone in an empty space, move a stone to an adjacent square, or spread stacks of pieces along the board. Whether players win or lose, take offers a beautiful and elegant experience to players both familiar and unfamiliar with the king killer Chronicle.

Definitely "a beautiful game." Easy enough that our six-year-old can learn it but complex enough that the adults enjoy playing it too.

Such a simple game in concept, but ends up being quite a masterfully complex strategy game. It's not hard to learn how the game plays, but it's challenging to win it. The components are simple but beautifully done. If you like chess and/or checkers then this game is for you as it combines the more interesting elements of game play from both with it's own interesting twist.

This game takes the best parts of Checkers, Chess, and Nine Men's Morris county and combines them into a shockingly elegant and deep game. The pieces are beautiful, too.

Precisely what the game is, as described... Simple in its' rules and complex in strategy. A perfect game for two people to spend time submerged in critical thinking.

This one is quick to learn and difficult to master — the basic elements of a great game! The pieces are high quality and the matches can be quick or slow, depending on how you play and the size of the board you’re using. It’s simple enough for children, but the strategy can get pretty intense, if you want that.
