Star Wars Chess Game

Star Wars Chess Game

This is a great starter chess set for a young player. It is made of plastic, but it is a durable kind and all of the pieces are still very uniquely made - it is easy to see who's who. What I really like is the ability to interchange the pieces from Queens to Kings to Knights etc. More importantly regardless of this feature it is not hard to distinguish which is which as the bases have the symbols on them. It was also very cool that they were able to include characters from all movies.

For $24, I guess I shouldn't have expected pewter or other, more "solid" material. For some reason, I was expecting die-cast metal or something, similar to the older playing pieces in a Monopoly game. There is a mix of characters, some from the VI and some from VII, so don't be tricked into thinking this is only from the new movie. I mean, Darth Vader, Darth Maul, and a few other "dead" characters are in the set. If you want pewter or die-cast pieces, then you will have to shell out the $2400 for that set. (Yes, that is $2400.00)

Love Star Wars and love chess, this is a great novelty item. The figures have great detail. Wold have given a 5-star, but the figures are made of plastic and the thin extremities bend easily. This is something you could almost leave up to display as part of you Star Wars collection. Otherwise it will be a fun twist on the classic game of chess.

Be aware, this is _not_ a collector's item, but was instead intended to be used by children, and even adults. The figures are molded from a light, relatively flexible plastic (a light grey for the Rebellion, a darker gold-grey for the Empire), while the bases are a more solid plastic, though hollow; together the pieces are light weight, and larger ones, such as the flying Jango Fett, can fall over. While the pieces on display at the front of the box are put together, the rest of the pieces will have to be constructed (figures attached to their bases) before play can begin. The instruction sheet included with the set includes both which figures belong to which bases, as well as diagrams on how the pieces are moved across the board. A HUGE PLUS: All the bases have the symbols of what they are painted in silver - example: Darth Vader's base has the king's crown on it, while the Stormtroopers have the symbol of the pawn upon their bases. With family members who are Star Wars fans, and one who's learning chess, we've found the variety in the figures a joy, and the symbols on the bases very useful in reminding us what piece is what. In short, this is an inexpensive chess set that fills the purpose effectively while being visually interesting.

Bought this to teach my 5 year old how to play chess and he loves it. The only complaint I have is that the pieces tend to be top heavy and awkward on the board, which means they fall down easily and some of them (like General Grievous) are a little big for the scale of the board. You probably won't want to keep it out in your study, but it's fun to play with.

I've been trying to teach the kids (boys, 8 & 11) to play chess for a couple years. The regular chess set just sits unused and lonely in the basement. They got this from a grandparent for no particular reason (3rd Thursday in August or something,) and they've played it at least 3x per week for the last 6 months. The pieces seem to be well made and durable, nothing has broken yet. The box has seen better days though.

The pieces and board are of OK quality. It was a present for a younger kid learning chess. It is what is expected for the price. Seems like it could last a while with care. The theme is the main point if the set. If you like star wars and chess than you will like it. If you are looking for something sturdy than you might want to look elsewhere.

Got this for my boyfriend's 7 year old son. He loves Star Wars and just picked up chess last summer. He loves this game set. It sits out on the coffee table most days. Great product for the price.

Got this for my 8 year old for her birthday. She loves it. The pieces are adorable and she loves sitting and playing it with her daddy. The pieces are nice and they do have a guide for what characters pieces are in chess terms. This is a great novelty for someone who likes chess and Star Wars, but doesn't cost a small fortune.

For a Chess Club and it was well received by the 6 - 8 year old crowd. The pieces is a little light but are pretty well made, unlikely to fall apart as easily as some Star Wars chess sets we have. The board is just a bit lame but can be used and it comes with an identify sheet, so the kids can tell what they are - in a game..
