Great as a decorative rain gauge however the accuracy is dramatically affected by the lip at the top which results in the water hitting the lip seemingly draining back into the cylinder. The lip adds approx 30% total surface area and because it has a rolled edge you would expect half of it to drain into the cylinder and half to drain out. Not sure what is happening but the total rainfall collected is approx 30% higher than what my weather station reports or even the 5 gallon paint bucket sitting in close proximity. I have not considered how much effect wind may have on the approx 30% extra surface area and its drainage into the cylinder, it may also be significant. Since it is not advertised for accurate measurement it would not be fair to downgrade it any lower than one star. I can still use it and know that I'm in the ballpark when I take a reading and just subtract 30%. Hope this helps for any accuracy questions.
Exactly as advertised! The plastic versions get hazy or become brittle after a summer or two due to UV exposure. I did not order this as a replacement for a Toland rain gauge. Instead... I made my own custom rain gauge holder out of copper wire and tubing and wanted a quality glass tube to complete the project. This one is perfect. The numbers are "baked" on and have a slightly raised surface and should last a long time without fading or wearing off. I included a photo next to a can of soda an beer bottle so you could get an better idea as to the actual size.
FYI: Ignore the complaints about this breaking from the consumers who forgot to empty it before the cold weather arrived. Granted the glass is not as thick as beer bottle... it's approximately the same thickness as a chemistry set test tube. The complaints of it freezing and breaking has nothing to do with the quality of the glass. Heck... I've had copper pipes freeze and break in my house during the winter! As long as you remember to empty it before a freeze or bring it in before winter arrives you'll be fine.
Bought an inexpensive but cute rain gauge at my local grocery, and was upset to see that frozen rain had broken the glass tube (lesson learned; empty the vessel!) The original brand wasn't Toland, but this replacement fits like it was made for my holder, so I'm super happy that I have a functioning rain gauge again! Product arrived quickly and very safely packaged, also!
The physical size of this rain gauge was a total surprise. The picture made it look like it would fit into my existing rain gauge holder. However, it is actually twice the size of my old/broken glass gauge. I love this new gauge. It is a whole lot easier to read than my old one, but I will have to fabricate a holder for it. (Something that will not scratch the printed scale off of the glass as it is removed to drain).
Toland makes a number of cute rain gauge holders. This is a replacement tube for me. One of my grand kids dropped mine. I was happy to find I could get a replacement glass. This is easy to read and marked in inches and centimeters. My rain gauge is in the middle of the yard (to get out from under our trees). It's big enough that I can read the gauge from the house (binoculars!)

When accidents happen, replace the udometer (glass vial) in your broken Toland Home Garden Rain Gauge with one of these Toland Replacement Udometers. Everyone loves classic Solar Rain Gauges, Garden Delight Rain Gauges, Tabletop Rain Gauges and Cattail Rain Gauges from Toland Home Garden, but accidents happen and when Fido gets out at night and bumps over your rain gauge you may need to replace the glass rain collection tube (also know as an udometer). Replace your broken rain gauge with one of these udometers, comes in either clear or amber colored. Both colors fit all styles of rain gauges (except of the Mini Rain Gauge), so chose your favorite.
This makes our 3rd glass part of the rain gauge. The numbers wore off after so many years outside and it was becoming hard to actually determine how much rain was in the gauge. The tube is large enough for me to get a good visual without venturing outside and have a pretty good idea of how much rain has fallen. The glass does not discolor with age or become brittle as plastic versions would. The markings can and do wear off, but serviceable anyway. Tip.. don't drop the gauge into the metal holder, but place it there gently. Our first glass died when I dropped it and it struck the metal and chipped a piece out of the bottom.
I didn't take in my rain gage last year prior to the first frost and the glass cracked. I was sure I'd have to throw away my entire rain gage but this replacement saved me from doing that. It fits perfectly. The ink is actually darker on this replacement than it was on the original.
So glad they sell these.
This is my 3rd replacement. Whatever you do, DON'T let water freeze in these things! That was my own fault every time LOL Oklahoma weather is so unpredictable though! Basically, once it's Winter just bring it in the house until it's 100% Springtime!
This replacement was perfect! I have a really pretty rain gauge I got on vacation a few years ago. Was really sad to see the tube had broken before I took it in for the winter. I think a deer hit it as I live in the mountains. Measured my rain gauge opening and ordered this one. Fit perfectly! Ordering another for back up! Easy to read and received quickly and in great shape!
Perfect replacement for my broken rain gauge. Could be a little cheaper (reason for 4 stars instead of 5) as I found it at Stein Gardens and Home for about $4 less afterwards. But it is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks Amazon!
