NETGEAR 8-Port PoE/PoE+ Gigabit Ethernet Unmanaged Switch 60W PoE Budget (GS108LP)

First off, let me say that this is a great product that is well built and works perfectly. For that it gets 5 stars.

I returned mine b/c I failed to read the questions/answers section for the product. I have Ubiquiti Unifi LITE APs (UAPACLITEUS). The PoE injectors they come with took up some extra space in my networking cabinet. This product would have tidied that up. But I failed to read that the Ubiquiti Unifi LITE APs run off 24-VDC, so they won't work with this product (which generates 48-VDC).

Just an FYI, b/c I had to bite $10 to return the thing...

I'm not using POE right now but opted for this to have it as an option if I need it later, for something like a camera system, for example. I also thought about getting the 8 port model but only got this one because it was a super low price at the time, and I already had an 8-port model so I had plenty of ports but just needed this in a new location. This having POE available gives it a lot of versatility. Being 1GB makes it feel future proof for a while at least, for me in home usage.

Physically it is the same size as some of the same branded 8-port models, so if you might want 8 ports, keep in mind you won't be paying a size penalty for that. It's like this one has some extra air space inside it. That's fine with me, though. If I ever need to stack them together they'll be the same size, which isn't very important but I don't mind it as a benefit.

Comes with a good sized power brick with a cord on both ends so it's not blocking and hogging your power strip.

Best bang for your buck. Works great.
I am using the PoE functionality.
Metal housing gives it a better feel.

Only negative I found was mounting. Not worth removing a star on the rating:
The mounting points on the underside are great to have but their design doesn't let it be mounted at any angle. For example it won't mount solid if you want the ethernet ports facing to the right when mounted against a wall. It will be loose in that position because the screw head won't "slip" into the slot (giggity) at that angle. It works but is kind of wobbly and not securely mounted. However if the ports are facing left it allows the screw head to slip in and secure the mount. Hope that makes sense.

I purchase Managed Netgear (and Cisco) Gigabit POE Switches at work, I'm an IT Director, and they cover everything we need for work. I decided to try a unmanaged Netgear POE+ switch at home for Cisco Wireless Access Points in the house, needed the POE+ due to the power level demand of the Cisco AP's, the AP's are not consumer AP's that you would be able to buy in a retail store. A little skeptical at first. The AP's have been working fine for about a month now, no power issues and, as a matter of fact, no issues whatsoever. I would recommend this switch if you need the power.

I am an IT professional and own a company who specializes in IT support and services for small businesses and residential customers.

This is a great PoE switch and comes in many different configurations for advanced users. The switch arrived properly packaged as you would expect for any Netgear product.

After hooking up the switch and getting all my Ports hooked up the switch worked great without needing configuration. This is a smart switch so a basic user would have no problems using this device.

The quality of this product seems high. It’s solid metal and heavy. It also included rack mounting brackets which I found surprising and impressive.

Make sure when purchasing this device you know how much power you will need overall to operate the PoE devices you will be connecting to this.

Overall get PoE switch for all users!

Description

The NETGEAR GS108LP is the industry's first flexible PoE+ 8-Port Gigabit Ethernet plug-and-play switch with 60W PoE budget. The Industry's first flexible PoE+ integrated technology allows you to increase or decrease the PoE budget at any time to provide to your devices the power they need with interchangeable external power supply and an intuitive power selector. The flexible mounting options (rack-mount, wall-mount or desktop) and the compact and fanless design make the GS108LP an ideal option for any business or home.

I was using a few smaller switches all chained together before I found this new switch and bought it. I love that all ports are PoE+ (albeit with a very limited overall power budget - at least with the PSU I bought), and that it is silent.

I use it to power two IP phones and three IP cameras. Zero issues.

The only thing I wish about it was that they made a 24 port version as well. Immediately after installing this I was down to only having one port available. I am a network engineer and I work with 100 gigabit circuits all day long, but at home I just want stupid simple. I don't even want a managed switch. ;-) Sadly, I think you have to move up the scale to a managed switch to get 24 ports. Houses are getting bigger with IoT. We need larger switches with basic feature sets still!

I chose this unit because of the high power output per port and the external power supply and size. Mine is mounted in an outdoor NEMA 3R box measuring 12 x 12 x 4 inches. Inside the box I installed a standard 120V AC dual outlet to which the switch is plugged into. The bottom of the box is drilled to allow access for conduits for electricity supply and also for no leak seals allowing for ethernet cables to enter and exit the box. Currently the switch is powering a Unify outdoor AC access point and three HD cameras with night vision. That leaves three more POE ports for expansion. Also, I have the box on the North side with the switch sealed inside to mitigate direct sunlight and heat issues. No problems even with outdoor temps in the 90's. Remember, if running a lot of POE devices, the LED's when on will consume more power than when off. Check the specs of your devices.

Netgear still makes an excellent unmanaged switch and is tops in that category. The quality of the product is outstanding --- all metal, not flimsy, well ventilated, sturdy, port info complete, and incorporates port status and function lights. Power adapter also well made and cord set/connector well designed. Though other PoE switches are cheaper in price, this Negear PoE switch is worth the additional money expenditure.

Pros:
This is a good 8 port switch 802.3af PoE on ports 1-4 and fully gigabit, this will support most security Camera's, IP Phones and Access Points, keep in mind some AC wave 1 and most if not all AC Wave 2 require 802.3at PoE. You also get maximum throughput on all ports at the same time many lower end switches are not capable of that.
Like all Netgear switches, a nice solid metal case, and fanless, and easily wall mountable. I like the power jack on the back but some people prefer all the ports and the power jack on one side.
LED notifications for PoE power draw and if you are maxing out the devices PoE capability.
9k Jumbo frames support great for maxing out your throughput

Cons:
No web managed interface for VLAN's or trunking.
Confusing warranty status, Newegg lists a 1 year warranty which Netgear's website lists a 3 year hardware warranty.

Other Thoughts:
This is a good product if you need a little expansion for security camera's, IP Phones or compliant wireless access points, or if you just want a good switch with PoE capabilities.
If you want something with more power or more PoE ports in an 8 port switch look at Netgears GS510TP.

Great product, plug and play. POE ports auto detect if they have a need to supply POE or not,, so all ports can be used for non POE items. Several mounting options (mounting hardware included) The housing is sturdy and so far I very pleased with the purchase. Netgear products have treated me well, and they do have the option of setting up a Netgear account where you are able to view your products purchased, register them and obtain support easily using the account.
