I love the New Yorker, but beware of Amazon's Lightning Deal '$5.00 for 12 issues' - the subscription automatically renews at the end of the three month period, charging you $99.00 for 12 months. They do send an email notifying you of this but it is easy to get buried in all of the marketing emails Amazon sends out.
I love this magazine, but my Amazon.com experience with it has been very painful. As a Kindle subscriber, I had hoped that I would be able to access all the articles, especially the ones that come in the New Yorker daily emails with featured news items. However I have not been able to access them, constantly getting the message that I have read my first ten articles free, and that I would have to subscribe to continue reading. I " chatted" with the Amazon personnel about this, and wrote to Conde Nast, who kindly set up a log in for me. But this hasn't resolved the problem. Yes, I get the digital subscription on time, but the daily articles are the ones I'd likely read first, and even with this Kindle subscription, I can't get at them. Buncha crap. Not the magazine, I mean, just the bugs that make it seem that Amazon is selling a good product without really standing by it, or providing full service. My " chat" experience with Amazon was terrible....I got handed around to three or four different people, none of them really solving the problem. It's still not solved. Caveat emptor.
I knew when I subscribed that I was getting the Kindle version and that there would be an expensive auto renewal. I'm okay with it, but I wouldn't be if I hadn't known what to expect.
I am willing to pay what I consider to be an exorbitant price for a magazine (omg!) because the writing and the reporting are stellar. I'm not a grammar or spelling fascist, which should be obvious from this review (and all of them). However, when writers are being paid for their work, and copy editors are being paid to correct it, I expect to see very few errors. And no really terrible ones. This magazine does pretty well, which means that I will pay what it takes to keep excellent writers and editors employed.
As for the content? The reviews, fiction, and poetry are the main draws for me. The news articles are well-researched and well-written, but they come from clear points of view (i.e., they are not strictly objective). I guess that's okay, since they do not pretend otherwise. Either way, I recommend the magazine for its form and most of its content.
The articles I read never cease to amaze me, they are such a contrast to just about all other news sources. So much research goes into the articles and it reminds me that news is not a 30 second sound bite but more of a history. Events that happen today many times can be tied to events from years ago. One gets a much broader perspective as a result of reading the New Yorker. Be warned that it takes some time and concentration to read, this is not People magazine.
What can I say? If you like to be a well-informed person, the New Yorker should be on your regular reading list. As it has been for decades, this is one of the best, and best written, magazines out there. Politics, culture, entertainment, humor, fiction, profiles of interesting people, and often unexpected subjects (this was many years ago, but one of my most memorable reads was a multi-part series on surfing, which illuminated what was so interesting about a sport that had never remotely interested me before).
Amazon sometimes offers great, if finite deals on magazines, and I was grateful to find this, because the magazine is beyond my budget at present. I'll enjoy it while I can.

Very much enjoyed my subscription: great, thoughtful articles, wonderful cartoons, interesting fiction, even like the letters. If only it didn't come every week! Can't keep up, so I let the subscription lapse and ordered the Atlantic., which uses some of the same (and same quality of) authors. Will miss the cartoons, though...
Love the magazine. I recieved the paper magazine AND the E mag. The sub was $99 annually. I explained that I did not need both paper and Emag. Amazon nicely cancelled it. I did not realize that the deal was you get both- sub is for the paper mag and the Emag is gratis.
Fantastic magazine. Doesn't taken itself too seriously. Great range of reporting and will written.
Brilliant articles, brilliant cartoons, and brilliant satire. Well worth it.
i discovered Newyorker in the flea markets here in Kenya some twenty years ago. i would wait for american expatriates to dispose them on the street. The stories are timeless and even a magazine which is five years old will still feel fresh.Reading newyorker is getting the best in nonfiction and non fiction writing every week. I am able to keep up with latest cultural, technological and human stories every week.
