We have only received one copy of the magazine, but it was very interesting with some topics that applied to our current situation. I find that so many of the DIY programs/magazines seem to be geared for the larger projects that take a lot of money. We need smaller projects that take less money and lend themselves to our type of home; not some 5 bedroom, 4 bath type. We have a simple 3BR, 1 1/2 Bath ranch style, that is older and needs updates, our budget is small and we have to save to do projects. When we see ideas and suggestions that look good to us, we can plan accordingly. Thank you for a great magazine!
The absolute best magazine for those with older homes, and perhaps even newer ones too. Every issue that comes in, I find articles that are directly applicable to my renovation of a 1923 home. Everything from practical tips to keeping the older home charm alive in projects using new wood. I used one article to design my deck, another to figure out the best way to skirt the house, and another to design some columns. Worth every penny and then some. This isn't just coffee table material, it's practical, and in one project you can pay off years of subscriptions.
I love this magazine for it's tool reviews, garden spreads, and practical homeowner stuff. I like it less for the design because sometimes I think it can be a little dated and conservative (it could be that the average reader is a bit older than me - I'm 25). The home tours are always great from a renovating standpoint (I love that they feature tons of Craftsmans!), but there are some tours that are not relatable to me because of the homogenized decor. And every now and then, they spend 3-6 pages on a very specific project, which I think could be either shortened or just linked to online. That's valuable page space! I will absolutely continue subscribing to this magazine because it's more about serious DIY stuff than about buying trendy of-the-moment tchotchkes like some other home magazines. I have learned a lot from it!
Okay look, I'm not ever going to buy the things in this book. A $4000 bathtub is never going to be in my house, and I laugh every time someone says, "And I painted all of this with one gallon of paint." Overall, it's amazing for ideas, the articles are useful. I like the pictures, even if I'm not going to do the projects.
I'm terrible around the house - I'm lucky to be able to screw a light bulb in. Regardless - I LOVE this magazine! It has so many interesting articles in it! Even though I don't do the projects I still enjoy reading about them. I love when they put "before" and "after" pictures in a story. When I'm finished with it my 85 year old mom reads it and finds it just as interesting. For the price this magazine can't be beat! I especially like to see if the house at the end is ever saved? You can log onto the TOH website to see what happened to houses that were previous issues.
I can tell I'm getting older - I used to get excited when my monthly Vogue would appear in my mailbox. Now? I get giddy when the latest issue of TOH arrives! I still like my Vogue but this is a great read as well!!

I bought a subscription of This Old House for my wife for Christmas. She has been very pleased with her subscription, but I don't tell her how inexpensive the subscription was. I find myself reading some of the articles even though I am not an "old house" fan. It's a little heavy on advertising, but I think that's the nature of the beast when you get a magazine at such a reasonable subscription price. But the magazine makes the wife happy, and that's all that matters.
Still enjoyable, after many years...It's changed, focusing now on many more small projects for the *average* person, rather than always the blow-out, *go for broke* (sometimes, literally) whole house projects that got TOH started in its evolution, years ago. That's all still here, but the focus now is on more-approachable, possibly weekend, weeks-long undertakings. Many snapshots of what other do-it-yourselfers have done, with great style and success, so that's fun, helpful and encouraging, too. Of course, there are the TOH regular pros we've all come to know, love and trust, so, it still feels like a visit with accomplished, super-skillful pro uncles/brothers who are sharing great info!
We gave the subscriptipn as a gift and the recipient was very excited to be receiving it. The free issue we received as the giver just came and I can't wait to see who'll find a project to try first me or my husband. lol
I love this magazine.
Pros:
Great pictures
Great step by step stuff for people with lower levels of experience in remodeling/home maintenance
Great advice/ideas for people with more experience that are looking to up the efficiency and convenience of their projects
Great information and stories (I read this on the porcelain throne and occasionally my wife wonders if I have fallen in)
I always feel like I get my money's worth
Cons:
I wish it was about 25% longer and had a few less ads - but I feel that way about all magazines
It only comes once a month
There doesn't seem to be a way to access the entire content of the magazine digitally as a paper subscriber - although I could be wrong!
Lots of information and ideas. It covers more then the show, but that is the same with movies duh? If you can only learn by watching a video (Shown) ... still get the magazine. Due to they cover topics that you don't think about, then you can go to their website, or youtube and know what you are looking for ... you will know what to call it. Well worth keeping it coming.
