This scale is accurate as hell. The only thing I can think of as to why people complain about drift is because they're trying to calibrate it and doing it incorrectly. The unit is calibrated from the factory, and when I tested it straight out of the box it was dead on. Read the damn directions. It's so simple to use I guarantee even a junkie can use it.
A few weeks after I bought the scale I bought a calibration kit (American Weigh Scales Calibration Weight Kit WGHTKIT, Class M2) selling at Amazon for $11.69. It comes with 50g, 2x20g, 10g, 5g, 2x2g, 1g, 500mg, 200mg, 100mg, 50mg, 2x20mg, and a 10mg calibration weights. I weighed them each 3 times using my weight scale with 2 rules: the scale must indicate zero both before and after the measurement and the weights were placed in the center of the weighing platform. I got the following results:
50g: 49.995, 50.003, 49.998
20g: 20.002, 20.004, 20.001
20g: 20.000, 20.000, 20.000
10g: 10.000, 9.999, 10.000
5g: 4.999, 4.999, 4.999
2g: 1.999, 2.000, 2.000
2g: 1.999, 1.999, 1.999
1g: .999, 1.000, 1.000
500mg: .500, .499, .498
200mg: .199, .200, .200
100mg: .099, .099, .099
50mg: .051, .050, .050
20mg: .021, .020, .019
20mg: .020, .020, .019
10mg: .009, .008, .009
The calibration kit is "class M2". I'm not sure what that means but I found a 1 gram class M2 weight with a "OIML tolerance" of ±3mg.
The agreement above says excellent things about both the "smart weigh" scale and the calibration kit. It certainly deserves 5 stars.
Today is May 13, 2019; almost a year since purchase. I have used the scale every day since to cut back on my smokeless tobacco use. I am now down to 0.205g a day from starting at more than 10g a day, almost no addiction left
The last few months, I have noticed drift. My empty smokeless tobacco can bottom, with the scale just turned on, weighed 9.254gm, followed by 9.240, 9.238, 9.237, 9.236, 9.237, 9.236, 9.237, 9.236, 9.235, 9.236, 9.235 which is about the correct weight. The scale indicated zero both before and after each measurement. Therefore I had a drift of 19mg.
Alternately, I can turn it on and after a minute or so it will change to, say, 0.008g. I will re-zero it and it will shift again.
This drift did not exist when I first got the scale.
Died after one use. I used it once and it worked well. Put it back in it's case and went to use it a couple of months later and it was dead. Check unit and replaced batteries multiple times. No sign of corrosion or other damage.
Update 3-15-17
I was contacted by customer service with an offer to replace the unit out of warrantee. They quickly replaced it with a new unit and I am very happy with both the scale and customer service. Thank you!
I have a 4 year old GEM-20 that's a nuisance because it shuts off too quickly. Oh, and I had to glue an o-ring to the little weight dish so it would clear the edge of the crooked platform. And STILL that $16 scale walked all over this "premium" scale.
This scale is lovely. The non-shutoff feature is great. But it's unstable. It never holds zero even after lengthy stabilization. It reads wildly different values in the last digit, and often into the next digit up. I tried re-calibrating many times (using the calibration weights from the GEM-20 because one of the calibration weights came broken open). ...
[LATER] After the above, the scale sat in its box. I retested after 2 weeks. The contraption had stabilized a lot. Apparently shipping knocks its marbles pretty hard. It's usable now, and lovely, a bit of alright for $30. I'm changing the rating from 1 to 4 stars.
Recommendation: install batteries, sing it a lullaby, set it down in a cheery spot free of earthquakes and disco, and in a week or two she'll be much better. If still unstable, ship it elsewhere.
This is an excellent scale I use for reloading ammunition. I use grains and it takes it to the hundredths giving me a very fine reading which certainly helps keep the load consistencies. I am having an issue with it as it appears very sensitive. For about a month it worked like a charm. Then one day it started creeping - constantly. I first thought I may have broken the sensor or something but then I tried swapping out the batteries that came with it. It still did the creeping thing. Two days later I tried it again and it was working properly. Go figure. I re-calibrated and I have used it 3 times since and it is still working as designed. Fingers are crossed. When it works - I love it.

There is an option to shut off this feature which is convenient when weighing items that are fine and require an extremely precise measurement. I tried a number of other lower-cost scales and couldn't get the thousandth of a gram resolution was looking for even though some of them advertised it. This unit is great! The cover definitely reduces any environmental effects (i.e. air circulating, breath, ...). I wish the platter was 2x larger (which would mean a larger cover of course). It would also be nice if it went up to 50 grams. I feel that 20 grams is just a little light when you're talking about the extra weight of various containers & bowls that have to be used to hold the material your weighing. The carrying case is nice along with the weights and the tweezers being included. I kept the plastic insert because there is about three quarters of an inch of space between the top of the case and the scale itself. The plastic insert keeps the scale from accidentally flopping around inside the case in the event that the case ends upside down and gets jostled around. There is also a velcro pocket on the inside of the case which is nice for holding small nitrogen free paper and whatnot.
Really surprise how close to reality is this scale! Sure you need a flat and stable surface with no wind at all. I use it to calibrate my tainting machine for paint. 16 cylinders of differents colorants. I compared the result from the ones of the professional scale mettler toledo 2000$. forget the last 0 but the rest was identical. I even challenged the guy who did the calibration and we where really close all the time.
You just need to recalibrate a lot every 2/3 times to be sure.
It felt well made, came with many accessories (batteries included!), and the manual was very useful. For a quick and fairly accurate measurement I'm happy and would recommend it to others.
I needed to weigh mcgs so it took me a while to get it calibrated and eventually I was able to get what I needed. I learned that simple things like static electricity will affect your results, I could literally move my spoon over the scale and watch the measurement change. From my experience I would not recommend it for anything less than 20 mcgs since the results were often inconsistent. However being able to measure .020+ mgs is very impressive.
Read and follow the manual especially if you're trying to measure extremely small amounts.
I am using this scale to weigh air gun pellets. I had another, less expensive scale, but it gave out on me. This scale is faster and weighs downs to .01gn. It is sensitive enough that you may have to reset the Tare if your pellets are dirty or you even breath on it. I have tested it repeatedly with the same pellet and it returns the same value each time to within .01gn, very consistant. It has cut my weighing time in half and pellets that weighed 15.9gn with my old scale have been resorted to 15.8, 15.9 and 16.0. The majority were 15.9, so the previous scale wasn't terrible, but this one is much better. Well worth the extra $10 or so.
Works great. Unbelievable accuracy in a small package, that you could normally only get in a much more expensive lab grade scale. I was able to use this for highly repeatable measurements to determine the mass of the electroplating deposition that I had made on small jewelry items. I'll definitely be using this for years!
It's a little tricky sometimes to use these type of scales, but with the draft hood over the top, it's made it very simple and effective. I'm familiar with much more expensive scales, and this scale seems to be just fine for any use I have within it's weight range. It's much better quality than a basic scale, and seems to have much less drift. I'm not sure how the other reviewers experiences differ, but I experience no drift with the use of the scale. Repeatability was fantastic.
